The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art undertakes design research and projects with industry that will contribute to improving people's lives

The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art in London is the largest and longest-running centre for design research at the College and is an international leader in Inclusive Design – the process of designing products, services and systems for ease of use by the maximum number of people. The Centre coined the term ‘Inclusive Design’ in a special issue of Applied Ergonomics in 1993, and since then has spread the term globally. The Centre was also key in developing the Double-Diamond innovation approach with the Design Council.

To date the Centre has conducted over 250 projects with industry partners such as Samsung, Blackberry, Stannah, and Karsan, third sector partners such as Age UK and Arthritis UK, and academic research councils including AHRC and ESRC.

The projects at the Centre span the whole spectrum of design, from strategy and policy, to graphics and visual communication, product development and engineering, transport and mobility, and architecture and the built environment.

The Centre also runs executive education workshops on Design Thinking, Inclusive Design and Creative Leadership for policy makers, designers, business people and engineers all over the world.
