ReStart BIKE

A solution by Fundacja Slawek submitted to New Life to Products!

A business solution, where 8 ex-convicts selected on the basis of their skills are trained to repair, restore and remake used bikes (creating snowploughs and bike-based vehicles for selling goods) as well to produce artistic items from bicycle upcycled parts. Designs are provided by students of Warsaw Fine Arts Academy and the bicycles handed over by inhabitants of Warsaw and the municipality.

One Page Summary

A multisector innovative strategy of the win-win-win… type — the donor gets more cellar space and does a good deed. Ex-convicts acquire practical skills making them more employable. 3 people are employed directly at ReStore centre. We help others find work. In case the business expands, as we hope, more trained ex-convicts are hired. Work is one of the most important factors of social integration translating into financial independence, social status, how one is perceived by others and being able to find one’s worth. ReStore is meant to be a friendly work environment that puts emphasis on human skills. We will also support our course participants to find work in other friendly environments such as bike services or design studios.
Fine Arts Academy students receive attractive courses of social design.
Possible customers have access to affordable bike shops that offer a variety of models, as well as tailor-made ones, with the incentive of knowing that the purchase itself is a good deed. Cyclists get a bike with a propulsion system without spending big sums on an electric bike. The city becomes more eco-friendly and contributes to professional and social integration of disadvantaged people. ReStore receives bikes from donors free of charge as well as quality designs from students/lecturers of the Fine Arts Academy. Due to this we get a competitive advantage over competitors working in the bike and design sector. Sales profits provide support for HfH Foundation to fight housing poverty. To sum up, ReStart BIKE’s innovation and strength reside in the fact that it responds to the needs of various groups in a coherent, creative and sound manner, by stimulating civic participation of different organisations as well as individuals and therefore building the so-called social capital. At the same time it meets the main criteria of ReStore, i.e. promoting ecological and social values.
