ReDI School of Digital Integration was founded by a team convinced that technology can break down barriers and bring people together to build new solutions to old problems. The idea of ReDI was sparked by the insight that amongst the refugee population there are incredible talents eager to learn and eager to contribute, who could help fill the 55,000 open IT jobs in Germany.
From the beginning, ReDI has been developed through co-creation between the Berlin and Munich tech community (including SAP, Facebook, Cisco and Microsoft) and the ReDI students. The aim is to provide students with valuable digital skills and a strong network of tech leaders, mentors and alumni to help create new opportunities for all. ReDI is a school which is offering several 3-month IT-programs, creative workshops, tech-talks, innovation projects as well as short term summer courses.
ReDI School has achieved tremendous impact thus far, with more than 380 students completing at least one of the 15 IT courses offered by the school. Each course has been designed to provide the students with theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience in in-demand skills such a Java, Java Script, Python, UX design, digital entrepreneurship, IOT and cyber security. At the beginning of each course the students pick a challenge from their daily lives, which they formulate into a problem statement. Each team then goes through a design thinking process to develop a paper prototype of an app or website which would help them solve this challenge. Over the course of three months, the students develop their theoretical and practical coding skills, with the aim to turn the idea in to reality The final results are shared with the public at an open Demo Day, where the students showcase the skills they have learned in practice.
The last ReDI Alumni job-market integration survey conducted showed that almost 50% of the surveyed students were placed in paid internships or jobs. Examples of hiring companies were Cisco, SAP, Cap Gemini, Kloeckner.i and Accenture. Furthermore, about 27% joined a university and 8% even founded a company. Only 15% are currently looking for a job. The success stories have resonated with German and international media like CNN, BBC, Washington Post and Forbes. Additionally, several important visitors like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and (former) US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Powell have visited ReDI School and exchanged perspectives with the students.
We believe in the power of collaboration and creating strong, sustainable alliances with and between our partners. We believe that the future is digital and that the education sector is in need of radical transformation and needs new examples of learning. Together, we wish to bring more diversity and innovation to the tech sector, both in terms of gender, colour and ethnicity.
We do not strive to be the best tech school in the world. We aim to be the best school for the world!
