Amicitia is the Latin for friendship and it is in the spirit of this that we co-create open and innovative projects to enrich communities and support the most socially disadvantaged members of society.
We are a not-for-profit mixed model social enterprise. Along with our trading partner, Independent Living Ireland, we have developed a client base which includes hospitals, nursing homes, disability and elderly care organisations. Over 1000 individual users use our technologies to remain safe and secure in their care environment. In 2017, we received seed funding from Enterprise Ireland and Cork County Council to integrate the next generation of "Internet of Things" technologies into our social business model. This will allow us to build smart communities with better-integrated care networks to support the ageing populations across the EU.
Profits from the sale of products and services are redistributed to support community development initiatives in our social hub. These include our community garden, markets and friendly call services for the elderly. This participatory space brings the community together through inter-generational events and workshops.
Our project was also chosen as one of five commended entries in the Homes for Smart Ageing Universal Design Challenge which formed part of the Government's Rebuilding Ireland programme. We were the winner of the KBC Bright Ideas award and also chosen as the first social enterprise to take part in the Bank of Ireland's startlab programme.
