Dr. Ioanna Katsounari is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology and Social Work at Frederick University and a Registered Clinical Psychologist in Cyprus. She obtained her Bachelors degree in Psychology in the UK, followed by post-graduate studies in Clinical Psychology in the U.S. She has extensive counseling experience with children, families, and adults in community and hospital settings both in the U.S and Cyprus. In the U.S, she completed her internship in a psychiatric facility where she worked with the chronically mentally ill. Dr. Katsounari has participated in national projects focusing on the provision of counseling and other supportive services among populations considered at risk, such as youth and families under the protection of Welfare services. She has collaborated with NGO’s in developing counseling services for underserved populations such as refugees, asylum seekers, and unaccompanied minors. She has also participated in European funded projects focused on the prevention of sexual abuse and training of professionals, and presented her research in international conferences. She has authored and co-authored articles and conference proceedings (with peer review) on eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder focusing on the cross-cultural aspects of these two disorders. Other research and professional interests include the study of community mental health, especially for the chronic and severely mentally ill.
