One Page Summary

The Sustainable Development Goals are important for everyone, but mostly for the young ones. Children will benefit most from reaching these goals as they are about their future and their future world. So why not involve them in creating awareness and solutions? The SDG Amsterdam Battle will help them to understand the SDGs, share the importance of them with family, friends, businesses, and others and start making the world a better place by developing concrete ideas for solutions for the SDGs in a competition.

Schools are by default environments best equipped for reaching all children in Amsterdam. A smart combination of content and competition will spark enthusiasm to enroll, and tools and support will help children to navigate through the process. Local specialists will be available as voluntary advisors and a well-known jury will deliver the final verdict on local tv.

Game dynamics will play a role in including all team members and supporters in order to ensure a joint effort that is fun to participate in. The multi-level character of the competition ensures inclusiveness in the city. Virtual schools will be created for children attending a school that wishes not to participate.

A separate track is targeted at local businesses to get them involved, spreading the knowledge and awareness even further and get started to create real results. The jury will also select a winning business during the live event. These businesses and results will also be displayed in an SDG Business Directory so other businesses can learn from it.

The heart of the competition will be an online community platform with (shareable) content, scores, dates and cooperation tools. The competition will start with a kick-off event, followed by a weekly video show (SDG Journaal) around one of the 17 goals and an assignments. After this stage, classes will choose one goal they want to enter the competition with. School classes will then compete within the school for the best idea after which the school will adopt the SDG of the winning team.

For the competition, each class is challenged to come up with the best solution for reaching one of the 17 goals. The plan will be presented as a pitch with a more detailed “project plan” attached to it in a standardised format. The winner of the school will be chosen by the students from the school and a teacher’s jury. The school will adopt the goal of the winning school team and will obviously support the team in the next round(s).

In the next phase, schools will compete against each other within their neighbourhood / borough. Each winner will finally enter the Amsterdam finale which will be a live event with an audience and a jury with well known “Amsterdammers” and will be broadcast on the Salto television channel.
