We will create and distribute 10,000 SDG "Action Packs" for teachers and parents. Each pack will include access to 3hrs+ of animated and live action video content on the SDGs; project cards incorporating "Amsterdam-specific" actions for young people; and profiles of young, local changemakers. These packs will help drive meaningful conversations in homes and classrooms across the city.

One Page Summary

The SDGs aren't always the easiest subjects to talk about - particularly when those conversations are between teachers and students, parents and children.

But without these conversations we miss a huge opportunity to engage - and work with - our young people, to make a real impact on our neighbourhoods, cities and world.

Through this project, our aim is to arm teachers and parents with the resources they need to kickoff real conversations in homes and schools right across the city; and help them turn those conversations into meaningful action.

To do this, Makematic are developing a series of 68 animated and live action educational videos on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, totalling approximately 3 hours of content.

Each bitesize film is aimed at young people and include 34 “Explainers” (17 primary and 17 secondary) that explore each goal in plain language and 34 “Actions” (17 primary and 17 secondary) which showcase the SDG related-work of young people from across the globe.

We will use this content to create “SDG Action Packs” - see attached image - physical, printed kits that incorporate:

  • a unique digital download code to access the 68 films
  • access to a dedicated online platform with public project showcase
  • 17 printed, Amsterdam-specific “project cards” with ideas for actions and activities young people can undertake
  • 17 printed, Amsterdam-specific profiles of young local changemakers
  • and a teacher or parent “user guide” with suggestions for how they might use the content to encourage young people to get involved or incorporate the SDGs into classroom study

We propose an initial distribution of 10,000 packs. 5,000 will be distributed to schools and a further 5,000 to parents via community-based organisations. Engagement will be tracked via unique access codes provided with each pack.

Each video is presented in English with closed captioned subtitles available in Dutch for the live action films and re-voiced versions of the animations. All printed materials can be made available in either Dutch or English (or both). Additional languages can be easily accommodated beyond the pilot stage.

While the core video content addresses the SDGs from a broad perspective, the project cards, profiles of young changemakers and parent / teacher user guides will be specific to Amsterdam. They will be developed with input from key stakeholders and reference groups, ideally facilitated by this process.

We will specifically highlight existing actions and actors in the city as a way of showcasing best practice and encouraging greater engagement in successful initiatives.

The pilot can be launched by November 2018 and can be easily scaled, at little to no cost, as required.
