Plastic Bag that Biodegrades in the Environment

A solution by CSIC submitted to Reducing the plastic material!

This proposal intends to develop specific biopackaging in the form of a plastic bag that will biodegrade in the environment and that will also have improved performance to reduce thickness and hence packaging materials consumption.

One Page Summary

Innovation in food packaging is a key strategy for the European Commission to reduce the environmental footprint of packaging materials. This project comprises the development and scale-up of an innovative biodegradable plastic bag. This solution will be developed to minimize packaging weight and also the environmental impact of packaging.

Nowadays, with an increasing social awareness, there is a need to develop renewable source-based, environmentally benign plastic materials (biopolymers), especially for use in short-term packaging and disposable applications. The manufacture of these biomaterials would not involve the use of toxic components, and could allow for composting into naturally occurring degradation products. Thus, the ideal packaging concept is currently this which entails lower carbon and water footprints, is biodegradable in the environment, and makes use of wastes or by-products.
