Artisan Food Project Solution - Mr. John Daly

A solution by Ireland Food Advisory Services Limited submitted to Co-operative Producer-led Initiative for the Artisan Food Sector

Based on personal experience, John Daly understands the opportunity to leverage economies of scale and multiplier effects through collaborative development and promotion including regional food initiatives. He has personally sourced products, built brands and delivered food products to multiple retailers for many years and has some of the resources in place already help deliver on this challenge.

One Page Summary

Having developed and scaled his own distribution routes and developed other assets (warehousing facilities and transport structures for chilled produce) over time, John Daly is ideally positioned to understand the growth aspects and phases of development of an food distribution group.

John has learned how to source products, build brands and deliver them in a condition fit for sale and understands that this is a challenge for many small / artisan food producers which are expert in terms of the produce they can bring to market but who do not have the necessary marketing, sales and distribution skills required to augment their core competence and to make it successful. John can bring his experience to these producers thereby helping them to innovate in terms of sales, marketing, IT and management / business processes.

His experience includes management of warehousing facilities in the region, including storage of chilled foods as well as knowledge on order generation/creation, order processing, dispatch, delivery and invoicing.

This experience will provide artisans with new insights into securing listings with the multiple retail organisations, incorporating IT into the business and aligning with suppliers, customers and other producers, effectively managing logistics and developing sales, branding, merchandising and marketing structures around their businesses.

Funding available via the Social Challenges Platform will help to establish the initiative (which will be a regional innovation in its own right) and put the necessary structures in place for its sustainable development. This initial funding will need to be followed perhaps by state support in the short term but in the long-term needs to be resourced organically by producers (i.e. a self-sustaining distribution and market hub).
