I believe I can connect the SDG House to the city’s population by having them co-create visuals. Working on 6 stories that fit the needs of local initiatives. And 17 illustrations depicting all SDGs. The project works with professional comic artists and focuses on producing work that can be exploited and stimulates real change. The proces and content will be actively coordinated.

One Page Summary

I believe in the power of images. And I feel that by combining local needs and visual storytelling this project can contribute to real change. It connects local initiatives to the SDG House who co-creates material that can be used and expanded upon.

By using visuals and graphic stories people will experience a deeper learning. These stories then will not only help understand challenges and solutions. They let people experience and feel what they are actually about. Connecting knowledge to problems and emotions to solutions.

My answer to the challenge: How to include more minorities, newcomers and a diverse segments of our city’s population to the SDG Community. Is through co-creating visuals that all parties can use and benefit from.

The way I will to do this is by bringing together SDG House residents and local organisations. To have them share values, knowledge, network and experience to co-create six graphic stories and seventeen visuals that can be used by all parties.

The Graphic Stories will be tailored to be used by local initiatives. These 6 stories will focus on parties that work with and support newcomers, minorities and a diverse segment of the population of Amsterdam East. The stories will make use of a narrative and the form and use will be dependent of the needs of the parties involved. The SDG Community will help and support these stories by sharing knowledge, network and experience.

Next the 6 stories there will be a joint project on visualisation of all 17 SDGs (Social Development Goals). During a series of meetings many parties involved will be challenged to define the SDGs in a way that it relates to the local context.

All stories and visuals will be visualised by professional comic artists.

After 6 months there will be 6 local organisations who can use visuals. These visuals can be used for marketing and communication, but could also serve as campaign, teaching or explanation material. Next to that they will have expanded their knowledge and network with and through the SDG House.

The SDG House will have benefitted because of 17 visualizations of the SDG, images they can use online and in print. Which will also be on display in a public place, at the end of the project period. Next to that they have been able to connect to local initiatives and publicly displayed their role as leading force in Amsterdam in working with, promoting and stimulating SDGs.

The project is ambitious in a ubtainable manner. I, Stijn Schenk, have been working on a variety of visual project. And I believe that organisations always have challenges that can be met through visualizations.

Next to my close involvement with the project and hands-on coordination the project also makes use of an incredibly talented group of artists. By selecting visual artists with interest and connection to the different SDG challenges, I believe that we can produce visuals and stories that can truly help. Help the local organisations, help the SDH House and help making improvements on 6 of the 17 Social Development Goals.

Plus it will bring the Social Development Goals into the focus of a wider audience. Who will be beter able to identify the SDG challenges we face and the importance of working together towards a better future.

Kind regards, Stijn Schenk
